Bitcoin Newcomers FAQ - Please read!

Welcome to the /Bitcoin Sticky FAQ

You've probably been hearing a lot about Bitcoin recently and are wondering what's the big deal? Most of your questions should be answered by the resources below but if you have additional questions feel free to ask them in the comments.
It all started with the release of the release of Satoshi Nakamoto's whitepaper however that will probably go over the head of most readers so we recommend the following videos for a good starting point for understanding how bitcoin works and a little about its long term potential:
Some other great resources include Lopp.net, the Princeton crypto series and James D'Angelo's Bitcoin 101 Blackboard series.
Some excellent writing on Bitcoin's value proposition and future can be found at the Satoshi Nakamoto Institute.
Some Bitcoin statistics can be found here and here. Developer resources can be found here. Peer-reviewed research papers can be found here.
Potential upcoming protocol improvements and scaling resources here and here.
The number of times Bitcoin was declared dead by the media can be found here (LOL!)

Key properties of Bitcoin

Where can I buy bitcoins?

Bitcoin.org and BuyBitcoinWorldwide.com are helpful sites for beginners. You can buy or sell any amount of bitcoin (even just a few dollars worth) and there are several easy methods to purchase bitcoin with cash, credit card or bank transfer. Some of the more popular resources are below, also check out the bitcoinity exchange resources for a larger list of options for purchases.
Here is a listing of local ATMs. If you would like your paycheck automatically converted to bitcoin use Bitwage.
Note: Bitcoins are valued at whatever market price people are willing to pay for them in balancing act of supply vs demand. Unlike traditional markets, bitcoin markets operate 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Preev is a useful site that that shows how much various denominations of bitcoin are worth in different currencies. Alternatively you can just Google "1 bitcoin in (your local currency)".

Securing your bitcoins

With bitcoin you can "Be your own bank" and personally secure your bitcoins OR you can use third party companies aka "Bitcoin banks" which will hold the bitcoins for you.
Note: For increased security, use Two Factor Authentication (2FA) everywhere it is offered, including email!
2FA requires a second confirmation code to access your account making it much harder for thieves to gain access. Google Authenticator and Authy are the two most popular 2FA services, download links are below. Make sure you create backups of your 2FA codes.
Google Auth Authy OTP Auth
Android Android N/A
iOS iOS iOS

Watch out for scams

As mentioned above, Bitcoin is decentralized, which by definition means there is no official website or Twitter handle or spokesperson or CEO. However, all money attracts thieves. This combination unfortunately results in scammers running official sounding names or pretending to be an authority on YouTube or social media. Many scammers throughout the years have claimed to be the inventor of Bitcoin. Websites like bitcoin(dot)com and the btc subreddit are active scams. Almost all altcoins (shitcoins) are marketed heavily with big promises but are really just designed to separate you from your bitcoin. So be careful: any resource, including all linked in this document, may in the future turn evil. Don't trust, verify. Also as they say in our community "Not your keys, not your coins".

Where can I spend bitcoins?

Check out spendabit or bitcoin directory for millions of merchant options. Also you can spend bitcoin anywhere visa is accepted with bitcoin debit cards such as the CashApp card. Some other useful site are listed below.

Block time 10 minutes (600 seconds). Not fixed?

I thought block time was fixed at 10 minutes, 600 seconds sharp. But it doesn't seem like the case.
As all bitcoin halving countdown websites show different hours left. I know they are just estimation as the block time could be more than 10 minutes or less than 10 minutes
My question is, what affects the changes in block time? It could be 9 minutes, and sometimes 11 minutes? Is it the hash rate or something else.

After every 210,000 blocks are mined (approximately every 4 years), the block reward halves and will keep on halving until the block reward per block becomes 0 (approximately by the year 2140). As of now, the block reward is 12.5 coins per block and will decrease to 6.25 coins per block post halving. When the supply decrease, the price will certainly rise even the demands remains the same.

Blockchain has undergone a stormy course for ten years, there are series of new projects and technologies sprung up like mushrooms after rain include Ethereum with smart contacts; Zcash with the first use of zero-knowledge proof; MakerDAO creates the decentralized mortgages, let alone to build a language that links between blockchain and the real-world. As the source of this technology revolution, Bitcoin has finished the energization of “Digital Gold”. On one side is the high attention brought by technological development, on the other side is the scarcity brought by “digital gold”. The dependence on Bitcoin will only get higher and higher. Thus, the block halving effect will become much more significant.

Since the block halving becomes a hotspot, users always choose to be desperate and use limited funds to open high multiple leverage to open long Bitcoin contracts and make a wish to take advantage of the block halving to earn a big profit. Lucian, the chief analyst of BitOffer considered that although Bitcoin has characteristics of gold, the world has suffered many chaotic recently (so as gold plummeted), and the market cap of cryptocurrencies cannot be mentioned in the same breath with traditional financial markets for the time being. The volatility of Bitcoin price trends is still relatively large, and easy to rise or plunge within a short time. Even if the BTC price is long-term bullish, the contract users purchased are likely to be liquidated due to short-term volatility, and eventually, end up with nothing.
BitOffer exchange launched an unprecedented solution to prevent liquidation — — Bitcoin options. So how do we trade Bitcoin options?
For instance, BTC is now at $7500, considered the price will rise in one hour, you spend $20 in buying a 1-hour call options contract. As expected, BTC successfully rises $500 and after system automated settle the contracts, you will earn $500 as the payoff, which is 25 times compared to your initial cost. Also, there is no risk of being forced into liquidation while a short-term price declines, and no position will be forced to close during the option validity period.
The above indicates the solutions for the risk control to BTC volatility, however, BTC freezes in a flat trading range recently, what should risk-preferred users make the move when the volatility rate is getting taper?
BitOffer exchange launched the “1-min digital options” with highly logical and fun to save the boring time. The operation is as simple as the “Sic Bo” game: all you have to do is to guess whether the BTC price will go up or down. The underlying will be the present price after bidding, and then you would earn the profit if you make a correct prediction of the direction, no matter the price trend was up or down. That is the charm of“1min digital options”, fresh and exciting, and make investment down to the earth.
The Chief Analyst Lucian believes that bitcoin will be expected to be Long-term bullish, investors can hold the bitcoin options without operation, and expiry settlement will magnify long-term benefits. For the short-term strategy and suggestion, 1-min digital options are a gorgeous choice that allows investors to trade frequently so that they can earn every cent of each minute.

Bitcoin halving event?

Tonight Bitcoin has been crazy with dropping as low as it is while I'm typing, currently at £3,213 and was double over 2 days ago. I have been buying bitcoin and litecoin for a while whenever theres a drop and I'm patiently waiting to cash out even if it's in a few years time.
My question is can anyone shed some light on what the bitcoin halving event is? Besides this info! - Bitcoin Halving is the event where the number of generatedBitcoin rewards per block will be halved (divided by 2). ... The number of bitcoin found perblock will become more scarce and this halving reward ensures that bitcoin total supply will reach 21 million
What's going on, someone update me please.

2 reasons why you should be bullish on Bitcoin now!!!

Today we are going to discuss about "why u should be or why u can be bullish on bitcoin". lets jump right into it .
we are coming straight to the point.
1. BITCOIN HALVING
The bitcoin reward halving or halving countdown is near around 111days approximately 4 months right now. Have a look on google trends . bitcoin halving searches is still going up which is a positive sign. so i personally predict or u can say its my opinion that in the next months we are going to see multiple media channels talking about the bitcoin halving/halvening and therefore bringing the attention back. i personally do not believe that bitcoin halving is fully priced in especially not by the people who dont even know about bitcoin yet and they can get excited about bitcoin halving as soon as they understand whats going on and how economics of bitcoin works, how the inflation of bitcoin works.
2. FUNDAMENTALS
I am not gonna talking about second layers solutions or improvements made by exchanges , improvements on ramps institutional investors or institutions etc.... like for example (CME FUTURES,BAKKT).
i am talking about the actual fundamentals as far as bitcoin is concerned. first of all security. bitcoin hash rate is on all time high territory. in fact today we have measured the second highest hashrate in history ever. bitcoin is as secure as it has never been before. we will see if that changes when the halving is coming up because of course then the profitability of miners is going to reduce to half but that is a story for another day . but not just the hashrate is something which is very positive for bitcoin but also segwit adoption.

The year 2020 came as several tokens halving countdown is on the process, especially the 3rd halving of Bitcoins is upcoming. As history told us, the consensus that expects the market to be bullish is widely accepted.
In addition, Bitcoin, called “Digital Gold”, is more and more acceptable as the safe-haven asset, which also pushes the market to boost. Besides, BCH, BSV, ETC, Dash, etc. also attract the attention of the market. What is more, several altcoins are also facing halving. So, the year 2020 is also called the year of “Crypto Halving”.

What is “Bitcoin Halving”?
Specifically, the Bitcoin protocol cuts the bitcoin block reward in half every 4 years. Every time a Bitcoin halving occurs, miners begin receiving 50% fewer BTC for verifying transactions. Until now, Bitcoins have been halved twice, which respectively happen in November 2012 and July 2016. The 3rd halving is expected to in 2019.05.13, and the reward for miners will reduce from 12.5 to 6.25.
The reward reduction means that the circulation of Bitcoins will take a longer period. However, it also means that new bitcoins from mining will be few and few. Moreover, the difficulty of mining enhancing makes Bitcoins rarer, which makes the value of Bitcoins much higher. No one doubts that it does benefit the bullish market.
Will the Bitcoin Halving catalyze the Bull market?
To investors, the thing most matters them is the Bitcoin price. After the last 2 halvings happened, the bitcoin price surged soon. Bitcoin Halving does stimulate the bitcoin price to surge. We can see that Bitcoin Halving is the most important catalyst for the bull market. Thus, investors hold a positive view of the upcoming halving in 2020.
In fact, the period between the year 2020 came and now, the tokens of which halving is upcoming including BSV, BCH, ETC, DASH all boomed.
Statistically, from 2019.12.18 to the highest point since the year 2020 came, tokens which increase the most are as follow:
BSV, $76.5 to $455.55, the change reached nearly 6 times.
ETC, $3.36 to $13.23, the change reached nearly 4 times.
DASH, $40.01 to $150.84, the change reached nearly 3 times.
BCH, $169.7 to $448.4, the change reached nearly 3 times.
BTC, $6433 to $10190.13, the change reached nearly 50%.
From the data above, we can see that the expectation of the halving really can stimulate the market to boost, which can make investors earn from it.
So, here’s a question: Will you buy Bitcoins?
Bitcoin, which owns the most recognition in the cryptocurrency industry, theoretically doubles the price after halving. Also, the upgrade of the miner machine is able to double the price due to it increases the budget. So, after the halving, the bitcoin price is likely to increase by 4 times. Takes the bitcoin price $10,000 as the basis, it may rise to a level that more than $40,000.
If you buy Bitcoins on the spot trading market and hold it, when the bitcoin price rises to $40,000, you would earn a 3-times payoff. However, if you buy Bitcoin ETF launched by BitOffer, the payoff would be 9 times to 17 times due to its automatic positions adjustment mechanism and its compound calculation, which means that its ROI would be much higher than that of Bitcoins on the spot trading market.
To the investors who prefer the long-term investment, it cannot be denied that Bitcoin ETF is the best investment. The patterns of buying Bitcoins on the spot trading market and investing in Bitcoin ETF are the same. They are all supported to buy or sell, but the profit of investing in Bitcoin ETF is at least 3 times higher than buying Bitcoins on the spot trading market. Overall, investing in Bitcoin ETF is much better than buying Bitcoins on the spot trading market.
